The Startling Similarities of “Zombieland” and UPNG

I don’t always compare myself to Woody Harrelson’s Tallahassee in Zombieland. Nor do I always go through my day-to-day routine taking mental notes on how I can modify standard office supplies, like a three-hole punch, to become survival tools. Maybe most of the time, but not always. Below are the first five rules of Zombieland, and how we at the University Press of North Georgia apply them to our working lives.

1. Cardio

We might not be running for our lives from flesh-eating zombies, but we are constantly chasing after improper grammar, under-developed plot lines, and rogue commas. To help build up our stamina, we stick to a strict physical training regimen which consists of wrists rotations, paper ream lifts, and pen curls.

2. The Double Tap

Editors edit. Then edit again. Then proofread. Triple Tap. Beat that, Zombieland!

3. Beware of Bathrooms

Too much coffee. Need I say more?

4. Wear Seat Belts

Our “seat belt” is a rather voluminous tome titled The Chicago Manual of Style.

5. No Attachments

You would think we would have learned by now to check our emails for the said attachments before sending them. You would think, and you would be wrong.
